Parks and Recreation

The theme for Ten Paces this week was Parks and Recreation, the TV show, which I hadn't really seen before actually. So I watched a few episodes and found it's a pretty good show, it's very much like the US version of The Office. Anyway, this is my sketch for said theme. It's of the character Ron Swanson who is possibly the funniest character in the show, he has some pure golden moments.

When I Grow Up

Well, I finally got the net back on in my new house, after five long days. Felt like I've been living in the dark ages.

Anyway, this is a bit late, but here are my illustrations for Ten Paces and Draw last week. The theme was 'When I Grow Up', so I had to draw the obvious thing and do an astronaut. I mean who didn't want to be an astronaut when they were kid knocking about? It would have been rad having chats to little alien fellas, asking them what's been happening, zipping around planets and having it away with hot alien women... or is that just me?

And here is my rubbish final illustration, which was based off a delightful sketch by Sarah Straub again.

I'm doing another illustration for Ten Paces next week, I think the theme is 'Parks' or something. In any case keep an eye out for that. Plus I may have to post a bit of my kid's book up soon, it's coming along rather nicely.

I've Really Let Myself Go

Just a bit of a test, trying to refine my style for the kid's book I'm currently working on. I really want to achieve greater depth to my illustrations and also more realistic rendering and shading whilst still keeping it cartoony. The final style will probably be like this, if not very similar.

I quite like the final one, it was a fun style to draw in. At times it felt like I was drawing up a Where's Wally puzzle.

Don't Give Up

They've started a new, sort of project, over on Ten Paces and Draw. It's called Illustrated Mixtapes, and basically a bunch of illustrators do a piece based on a song. I got to do Don't Give Up by Noisettes, which is a pretty bangin' song. Be sure to check out the other illustrations, which are pretty rad.

Fair Bit of Work

Some Big Old News

Rather big news; I quit my job the other week at Reborn, and am now going to be doing freelance illustration full time. This is something that I've been wanting to do for some time now and I'm finely in a position where I can make a go of it.

So keep a look out because I'll be putting up some more illustrations over the coming months from some pretty awesome projects. I was even thinking about maybe doing some commissions, because no doubt I'll have a bit of down time here and there. If any of you are interested in me doing some commissions, email me and I'll try and get my shit organised so I can start.

Star Wars and Korra

A bit late, but here are my second bunch of submissions for Ten Paces the other week. The theme was Fan Art, so naturally I had to do Star Wars, and the sketch that I took to final was of a cartoon called the Legend of Korra, which I have never heard of in my entire life. But it was fun to draw though.

Rachel Dougherty went to final on my Star Wars sketch, and I love it even though I don't quite get it.

And my final piece, which was based of a sketch by the awesome Natalie Andrewson.

Really wanted to enter this weeks theme, which was maps, had a pretty cool idea for it as well and I did start the sketch... so maybe one day I may get around to finishing it.

Ten Paces and Draw

I was recently asked to join Ten Paces and Draw, a blog where illustrators get a theme every couple of weeks and sketch up an image, submit it, and then receive a sketch from another illustrator and render it out as a final illustration. It's a pretty neat idea, so keep an eye out and you may see some of my work pop up on there.

Illustrators Australia

This is pretty cool I guess. I was asked a couple of days back to become a member of Illustrators Australia.

It's an organisation that helps promote illustrators work from around the country, it publishes a yearly journal and newsletters, showcasing the member's work. Hopefully it will help me in getting more illustration work. Fingers crossed anyway.

My Northern Ireland Story

Hello again, as well as Habitat, another project I've been working on has finally launched.

It's for Tourism Ireland, and features Jimeoin, a brilliant stand-up comedian who's always knocking about in Australia. It's a sort of choose your own adventure style thingy on YouTube... I "designed" it. It is intentionally shite, we sort of went with that dodgy cut-out style, very much inspired by Terry Gilliam's animations on Monty Python. Except Monty Python is funny. Have a look anyway, there is a giggle or two in there.

An 8-Bit Sneak Peak

Bit of a sneak peak of a little personal project I've started working on.

Basically 8-Bit representations of Star Wars characters! It's just a bit of fun really, and I can knock out a few every now and again when I get a bit of spare time. I'd like to do a whole series covering The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future and so on.

I'll be doing these as big old posters and should hopefully have one done soon...

Habitatland

Very exciting this... I've been working on this game for the past few months, illustrating every little object in the world, and it's finally going live at the beginning of next week!

This was the first style screen that I did when we first started, and the style hasn't changed since.

These were the best clients I've ever worked with, there were practically no changes whatsoever; it was incredibly refreshing. It's a pretty rad game, as the real money you spend in the game goes straight to Habitat for Humanity Australia so you can feel a little less guilty about wasting money on silly little in-game items. You can read a bit more about how the game works and so on here.

Anyway, you can play the game here (as of next week), and you better, because its for charity (shakes fist).

Cultural Weekend

Bugger me, I have had a mega-cultural weekend. Went to a fair few talks and performances at this thing.

Really great work and brilliant artists. I rediscovered the work of Jim Woodring and Roger Langridge; if you haven't seen their work I highly recommend you check it out. I feel so inspired after having seen all of these great comics and cartoonists, that I just have to draw something, right now, no matter what sort of rubbish it is.

Catchment Cartoons

So I finished this massive illustration project the other day and thought I'd finally put it up on here. Basically it was for a state government educational program for kids, where I drew all of these good/bad Australian animals and plants. Have no idea how they're going to be used, I just drew them all and asked for my cheque.

A Whole Bunch of Crap

Just uploaded a whole new bunch of my crap. Firstly, a final illustration from this kick-arse project I've just started. Basically, they're for a program to educate kids on good/bad Australian animals and plants (half of which I've never heard of). And here it is.

Hopefully, I'll put some more up as I do them. Also, here's some old crap from last year.

Thought I'd put these up because this new project has pretty much come from those illustrations above, in terms of style. Plus it shows the, sort of, change in my cartoon style, which has gone from crap to slightly less crap.

Very exciting news. Well, I think it is. I'm going to be doing a comic with this guy. An awesome writer, hence he's writing it and I'm drawing it. And it's going to be a lot of fun. It has zombies.

Here is a concept of one of the main characters thus far:

Mucking Around

At work now we've started getting a couple of hours each week or fortnight where we can work on a little personal project. Whether it be a quick sketch, playing around with some type, or in the case of developers, trying to do something cool with code or Flash. Its a neat idea, and it gives me a chance to try different styles and just experiment. It's not always going to work out the way I want, but I guess that's the whole point of this little experiment.

Anyway, hopefully this is the first of many little experimentations that I'll be uploading on a regular basis:

Red Right Hand

I've uploaded a fair few screenshots from my short film Red Right Hand on me site; an animated short that I did for my final year uni major. I uploaded some a while back on my old site but I was going through my old files today and decided to upload the rest despite there crappiness. But also, it's to give an idea of how my style has changed compared to my comic Vagabond. I mean I pretty much based Vagabond off Red Right Hand, mainly because I'm too lazy to come up with another story and I wanted to have another crack at it.

I'm the Grinderman...

I went and saw Grinderman at the Enmore in Sydney on Friday night and was blown away. They were awesome! And I felt compelled to draw Nick Cave. He is an absolute legend and has such an iconic face that is so much fun to draw. Hence this...

I'm still trying to sort of find my own style, in terms of painting and art in general. This is kind of a blend of photo-realism and a somewhat comic/caricature style. Hope you like it.

Comic Books

It's been a dream of mine for some time now to try and get into the comic book industry. I currently work as a graphic designer and illustrator, but I would love to work full time in the comic book industry. Today is the first step in this direction. I've started working on a little, sort of, mini-issue in my spare time called "Vagabond" and hope to eventually build up a strong enough portfolio to take to the various publishers.

Over the past few years I've been working predominantly digitally, drawing and inking in Photoshop. But with this bunch of illustrations I've attempted to go old school and ink the illustrations traditionally. But I'm still going to colour them in Photoshop.

I've uploaded the cover of this little experiment, so if you get a chance please have look and tell me what you think.

I'l be uploading the pages as I do them, so stay tuned.
